February 2008

 LENT BEGINS SOON!

Lent will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 6.  Masses will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., with ashes distributed during the Masses.  Parishioners are encouraged to bring their palms from Palm Sunday 2007 to church by Sunday, February 3 to be burned for the ashes we will use.

Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast and Abstinence.  Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are required to fast, eating one meal along with two lesser meals which together do not equal one full meal.  Liquids are permitted between meals.  Catholics 14 years of age and older are obligated to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, as well as on all the Fridays of Lent.

Join us on the Friday evenings in Lent at 7:00 p.m. for Stations of the Cross, outside if the weather permits.

PARISH ITEMS

CATHOLIC TIMES SUBSCRIPTIONS: February is Catholic Press Month, and also the time when you may renew or begin a subscription to our diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Times.  Subscription envelopes are included in your February collection packet. For $15 per year, subscribers receive a Catholic perspective on the world around us.  Local, national, worldwide and Vatican news, as well as diocesan, parish, and school stories, articles and events are delivered right to your home.  Bishop Campbell encourages every Catholic family to subscribe to The Catholic Times.  Look for your envelope and sign up for, or re-subscribe to the newspaper of our diocese.  We send the diocese our revised subscribers list in early March.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: Each month, we have an opportunity to join others in the Day Chapel on the First Friday and Saturday.  The prayer intention for March 7 & 8 is for all in need of physical or spiritual healing.  Your prayers are truly appreciated!

LENDING A HELPING HAND:  Our Food Pantry Collection to benefit local residents is held the first weekend each month.  Please bring your donations of foodstuffs to the Gathering Space on March 1 & 2.

OUR CONGRATULATIONS to two school alumni ('04) who were inducted into the Central Crossing HS branch of the National Honor Society.  Their names are Michelle Meyer and Thomas Myers.  Also, these students at St. Charles Preparatory School are on the second quarter Honor Roll: Brian Baker, Alexander Bastoky, Samuel Powell, Matthew Sova, and Ola Williams.  Bernardo Morales is on the Merit Roll.

JUST A NOTE OF THANKS to the three wonderful men – Mr. Ritterbeck, Mr. Ellis and Mr. McGue -- who came to my assistance at the 9:30 Mass on December 16.  Due to their quick help and knowledge, everything turned out well.  Also all the wonderful prayers from all the people in church that day certainly helped a lot too. Thanks also to our wonderful priests, Father Eilerman and Father Brosmer, for their prayers and assistance!  It’s a great comfort to have such good people in our parish that can help us and pray for us. These get us through the small crises like the one I had, but I’m doing well. Thanks you all and God Bless you!

LENT AND RCIA

“The period of purification and enlightenment, which the rite of election begins, customarily coincides with Lent.  In the liturgy and liturgical catechesis of Lent the reminder of baptism already received or the preparation for its reception, as well as the theme of repentance, renew the entire community along with those being prepared to celebrate the paschal mystery, in which each of the elect will share through the sacraments of initiation.  For both the elect and the local community, therefore, the Lenten season is a time for spiritual recollection in preparation for the celebration of the paschal mystery.”  (138, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

The rite of election will be celebrated by Bishop Campbell on the afternoon of the First Sunday of Lent (February 10) at St. Edward the Confessor Church, in Granville.  The catechumens and candidates will be presented to the St. Cecilia Church at the 9:30 a.m. Mass to ask for our community’s recommendation to the Bishop.

During the Masses on the following Sundays, liturgical rites will be celebrated to “purify the minds and hearts of the elect as they search their own consciences and do penance.”  The first of these, a Penitential Rite for those already baptized, will take place at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on February 16.  The scrutinies for those who have not been baptized are scheduled for 7:30 a.m. February 24, 9:30 a.m. March 2, and 12:00 noon March 9.  These liturgies are an opportunity for renewal of the entire community, also, as we search our own consciences and do penance.

Parish Pictorial Directory...It's Coming!!

The Parish Pictorial Directory will be updated in the Spring of 2008!

All participants will receive an 8x10 photo and a Free Directory!  Photos will be taken 2/7, 2/8, 2/9, 2/12, 2/13, 2/14, 2/28, 2/29 and 3/1/2008.

We would also like to update all parishioners’ contact information including current address, phone number and email addresses as applicable.  Updating phone numbers is particularly important; frequently when families move within the parish, we receive change of address information from the postal service, but do not learn if there is also a change in telephone numbers.  In addition, some households no longer have land lines and we would not know of that unless you notify us.

All groups and ministries who would like to contribute photographs for the activity pages, please forward to my attention in the parish office.  If you would like to volunteer for scheduling, hospitality, format and layout or have would like any additional information, please contact Mary Hermosilla at 921-8165 or maryhermosilla@columbus.rr.com.

PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR

How we organize our society—in economics and politics, in law and policy—directly affects the common good and the capacity of individuals to develop their full potential. Every person and association has a right and a duty to participate actively in shaping society and to promote the well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.  (“Forming Conscience for Faithful

Citizenship,” No. 47)

Lent, with its three disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, is a good time for us to give some thought to developing our consciences, particularly as it relates to the poor.  Parish Path through Lent and Eastertime has this to say about almsgiving:  “It is to remake the world, or, rather, to restore it.  It has to do with time and space, with money and goods.  It is about the wholeness of things and people, the right relationships of those who dwell on the earth to the earth and to each other.  It aims to right the maldistribution caused by greed or power or whatever else.  It ignores neither the world nor what is in front of one’s face.  Like fasting, almsgiving is a year-round habit, but being who we are, we need a Lent to put ourselves in this shape.”

Here are some points about our responsibilities to the poor and vulnerable which the Bishops of the United States gave us in their November statement, “Forming Conscience for Faithful Citizenship.”

50. While the common good embraces all, those who are weak, vulnerable, and most in need deserve preferential concern. A basic moral test for our society is how we treat the most vulnerable in our midst. In a society marred by deepening disparities between rich and poor, Scripture gives us the story of the Last Judgment (see Mt 25:31-46) and reminds us that we will be judged by our response to the “least among us.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains:  “Those who are oppressed by poverty are the object of a preferential love on the part of the Church which, since her origin and in spite of the failings of many of her members, has not ceased to work for their relief, defense, and liberation through numerous works of charity which remain indispensable always and everywhere.” (No. 2448)

51. Pope Benedict XVI has taught that “love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind, is as essential to [the Church] as the ministry of the sacraments and preaching of the Gospel” (Deus Caritas Est, no. 22). This preferential option for the poor and vulnerable includes all who are marginalized in our nation and beyond—unborn children, persons with disabilities, the elderly and terminally ill, and victims of injustice and oppression.

The Bishops point out these rights of all people:  Jobs for all who can work, with decent working conditions and just wages (“Workers, owners, employers, and unions should work together to create decent jobs, build a more just economy, and advance the common good.”); Welfare policy which will reduce poverty and dependency, strengthen family life, and help families leave poverty; Social Security’s provision of adequate, continuing, and reliable income in an equitable manner for low- and average-wage workers and their families and their survivors when a wage-earner dies; Affordable and accessible health care; Safe, affordable housing; An agriculture policy providing food security for all, a just return to the farmers and farm workers for their labor as well as safe and just working conditions and adequate housing.  (“Supporting rural communities sustains a way of life that enriches our nation.”); a quality education.

The Bishops say, “The work for justice requires that the mind and the heart of Catholics be educated and formed to know and practice the whole faith. …  What faith teaches about the dignity of the human person and about the sacredness of every human life helps us see more clearly the same truths that also come to us through the gift of human reason. At the center of these truths is respect for the dignity of every person. This is the core of Catholic moral and social teaching…”

Parish School of Religion (PSR) - We remind our families that our next scheduled break will be on Easter Sunday and Monday, March 23 & 24.

Sacramental Preparation Programs:

For expectant families or those with infants, our next Parent Baptism Class is scheduled for February 10 at 1:30 p.m.  Please call 878-5353 to pre-register for this session.  A reminder: we do not schedule Baptisms during Lent (February 6 – March 23) nor on Sundays with special events such as First Communion (April 20 & 27).

The second graders preparing for First Communion should return their “Take Home Retreat” scrapbooks by Monday, February 11. Other forms, such as the Jesus Day permission slips, Baptismal Certificates and First Communion Planning Forms are due in the Parish Office by Wednesday, March 12.

Our Confirmation Day of Reflection for Candidates and Sponsors will be held in the Parish Center on Saturday, March 8.  The retreat will be conducted by our Youth Ministry Director, Joey Fino, and members of the St. Cecilia high school youth group.  It will include an opportunity for Individual Confessions.  Our candidates, sponsors and their families will attend the 5:00 p.m. Mass.

The deadline for the remaining Confirmation paperwork is Monday, March 10.  Candidates are asked to submit all their Service Hour documentation, including the report sheet and the signed reflection exercise, as soon as they have the entire package ready.

Confirmation 2009: Seventh graders in our religion programs are encouraged to begin accruing service hours as well as considering choices for their sponsors.

2008 Vacation Bible School   It’s not too early to think about getting involved for this year!   We have chosen the Ligouri/Gospel Light “SonWorld Adventure Park: A Thrilling Ride With Jesus!” as our program.  At this time, we are encouraging adults and teens who wish to volunteer as helpers, either before or during the VBS, to let us know of your interest.  Call us at 878-0133 if you want to volunteer or have any questions.  We will have an initial planning session on Thursday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A & B.

Please note: In keeping with the Safe Environment Program of our diocese, all helpers 18 and older who will be working with students will need to have a background check performed and must attend a session of Protecting God’s Children, the abuse awareness workshop used in our diocese.  This includes helpers for the Confirmation Retreat and the second graders’ Jesus Day, as well as helpers for VBS or PSR.  We also ask that you sign a Code of Conduct.

For those who need to attend Protecting God’s Children, upcoming sessions are scheduled at: DeSales High School on Tuesday, February 5, 6:30 p.m.; Ready High School on Tuesday, February 19, 6:00 p.m.; Hartley High School on Thursday, March 6, 6:00 p.m. and St. Charles School on Monday, April 7, 6:00 p.m. Please register online at www.colsdioc.org (click on “Protecting Our Children”) or at www.virtusonline.org (choose “Diocese of Columbus, Ohio” as the location).

 Wanted: Quilt Frame

The nimble fingers of the Quilt Group are back in action, busy making quilts. However, we could use another large quilt frame.  If you have one you are not using and would be willing to donate it to the Quilt Group, it would be most appreciated.  Contact Rita Crissinger, 878-8619.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

During the month of December we were focused on the Christmas Basket program.  We want to thank everyone who helped make the packing and deliveries a huge success.  We packed and delivered 107 baskets to feed 350 people.  We could not have done this without your help.  We also delivered food to 35 people throughout the month from calls from JOIN.

We are currently deciding on an Easter project.  At this time we are working on different ideas to help those in need within our community.  There are many projects open for discussion from working at the Food Kitchen, collection of blankets and coats for the homeless to inviting children for an afternoon of activities and lunch.

We want to express our gratitude for the December collection.  Our funds were very low at the time and we had to direct many calls to JOIN.  Your generosity will help us during the winter months to meet the needs of our neighbors and community.

Anyone interested in attending a meeting, please do not hesitate.  We meet on the first Tuesday of each month in meeting room A at 7:00pm.  Following every meeting we make sandwiches for St. Lawrence Haven.

Enrich Your Prayer Life

Mark your day with prayer.

Pray with Scripture.

Do some spiritual reading, listening, and viewing.

Pray with others.

Go on retreat – maybe even online.

The Promise

On the day when your promise of commitment weighs heavily on your shoulders and you stoop beneath its burdens, may the promise dance within you to strengthen you.

And when your embraces lose their warmth and become like rituals of duty, and the ghost of romance disappears behind a long day’s toil, may the promise wrap around you and hold you close and surround you with love from its Source.

When the bitter winds of change transform your early loveliness into roughened hands and smile lines, may there come across your faces an easy knowing, a comfortable peace, a deep rooted-ness that connects you to the eternal promise of Love Beyond All Imagining.

May the new life of creation be yours.

May the comfort of the sunshine be yours.

May the soft earth nourish you and make you strong for one another and for your children and restore your resolve for promising.

And so may a soaking rain work these words of promise and peace into you, protecting you from harm and harboring you in the presence of one another for eternity.

By Mary Jo Pederson on www.ForYourMarriage.org. This blessing is an adaptation of a beannacht, an ancient Hebrew form of blessing used to communicate the power of the Divine within families and later within believing communities. This beannacht is dedicated to married couples.
