UPDATE ON FR. EILERMAN’S SABBATICAL

The departure time for my sabbatical is quickly approaching.  I leave for Rome on September the 8th and will return to the parish for the weekend Masses of December 13 and 14.  There will be about 25 priests participating in the program.  We will be living and studying at the North American College, which is close to the Vatican.  Our course work will include the study of Liturgy, Canon Law, Moral and Bio-Medical Ethics, Pauline Theology and Scripture.  We will also be taking courses on Preaching, Christian Art and Architecture, Women Doctors of the Church, and the Saints.

October the 17 through the 26, there will be a break from classes and we will make a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.  The Sabbatical program ends with a week retreat in Assisi, Italy, home of St. Francis.  I end my time away by doing some traveling in Germany.  Among other things, I want to visit the town from which the Eilermans came.

During my time, away Fr. William DeVille will be helping Fr. Brosmer with the celebration Masses.  Fr. Deville was ordained in 1962 and retired this past July.  He most recently served as pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish on the east side of Columbus.  The only Mass schedule change during my absence is that there will not be an 8:15a.m. Mass on most Wednesdays.  The 9:30a.m. Wednesday Mass will be celebrated.

I feel very blessed to be given this opportunity and I ask for your prayers that my sabbatical will be a time of renewal and that I will be open to the graces that God wishes to give me.  I will be remembering you in my prayers and in the Masses that I celebrate.    Fr. Eilerman

Schedule includes:

Mass, Anointing of the Sick and the-talk by Rev. Raymond E. Lavelle   “We All Need Hope” and “The Aflac Duck in You”

Lunch

All persons 60 years of age and over are invited.  Thanks to a grant from the diocese, there is no charge for members of St. Cecilia Parish or 50+ Club; the cost for non-members is $5.

Please RSVP with your lunch reservation no later than Friday, September 19; forms are in the church.

St. Cecilia Adult Education

In celebration of the Year of Saint Paul, St. Cecilia’s Adult Ed ministry will offer a 6-week series on this Apostle to the Gentiles.  Sessions will be held in Meeting Rooms A&B after 9:30 Mass on Sunday (during PSR, 10:50 to 11:45 a.m.).  The series will begin October 5 and end November 9.

Various speakers will present the life and times of Saint Paul, his letters, and the churches to which he wrote.  Using passages from Saint Paul’s letters (the 2nd readings from the Sunday liturgy), we will learn and exercise several methods for reflecting on scripture.

We look forward to your participation in at least one of the six weeks!  You do not have to attend all six sessions, so please plan to attend as many sessions as you can.  Watch the bulletin for more information.

If you can help with childcare, or if you would be willing to provide baked goods for refreshments, please contact Jane O’Loughlin at 870-9427 or janeol@ameritech.net.

SOMEONE NEEDS YOU!

The July 2008 issue of U.S. Catholic carried an article “Now a Word from Our Sponsor” in which Beth Knobbe, of Chicago, writes:

“Being an RCIA sponsor does not require any professional training or fancy degrees.  The best RCIA sponsors are those who recognize the living God at work in their own lives and are willing to share that experience with others.

Sponsors don’t have to be ‘perfect Catholics’ or experts on every detail of Catholic doctrine.  What’s important is that candidates have examples of ordinary people who are living their faith each day.

Most RCIA classes have a catechist who is responsible for the actual teaching and facilitation.  Candidates, however, frequently call upon their sponsors to be resources.  A favorite response of mine when someone stumps me with a question is, ‘I wonder those same things myself sometimes.’  Then we use their questions as an opportunity to discover, learn, and grow in faith together.”

Are you an ordinary Catholic who could serve as an example to an adult interested in the Catholic faith?  Think and pray about that.

The sponsor accompanies the catechumen/candidate throughout the RCIA process:  attends the catechetical sessions, sits with the catechumen/candidate and together they process the material taught.  The sponsor presents the catechumen/candidate to the Church at the liturgical rites which are part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.  Many times the catechumen/candidate will have family members or friends who are influential in their decision to investigate the Catholic Church; having a sponsor who is outside that realm provides a broader perspective.

If you have received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) and, if married, your marriage is valid in the Catholic Church, you are eligible to sponsor another adult.  Call Sue Baker (853-9379) if you are interested.

BINGO TEAM SCHEDULES

Team Members, please clip and save this schedule of dates for Fall 2008.  As always, if you are going to miss a scheduled date for your team, please use the list of volunteers to obtain a substitute.  If you need a replacement list of workers, please call (878-5353) or stop in the Parish Office.

COMMUNITY BILLBOARD

MASS TIME REMINDER: To accommodate our parish members, during this summer the last Mass on Sundays was held at 11:30 a.m.  On the weekend after Labor Day, we will switch back to our regular Mass schedule.  So from Sunday, September 7, 2008 until Sunday, May 24, 2009, the Mass times will be Saturday 5:00 p.m., Sunday 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 12:00 noon

HELP IS NEEDED to staff our Bingo teams!  We have ten teams, with a five-week rotation, so you work only 10 or 11 dates in a year.  Right now, we are in great need of some generous adults to join our teams.  Any adult member of the parish is welcome!  If you are interested in helping, please call Barb at the Parish Office (878-5353).

BLOOD DONATION DRIVE COMING UP!  The American Red Cross will conduct a Blood Drive here on Thursday, September 25 from 2 to 8 p.m. in Meeting Rooms A & B.  Both new and experienced donors are invited. A typical blood donation takes approximately an hour, so why not schedule some time to give the gift of life to someone in need?  Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in generally good health, and have a positive ID – Red Cross donor card or photo ID showing date of birth.  Please plan to participate in this needed cause!

FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP  Opportunities to exercise our moral obligation to participate in political life will be offered at Saint Cecilia in September.  The Knights of Columbus will sponsor a non-partisan voter registration drive after each Mass the weekend of September 20-21.  The deadline to register for the November election is October 6, 2008 and this will provide you an opportunity to be registered.

Adult Education is planning to show a 10 minute video "Faithful Citizenship" after each Mass the weekend of September 27-28.  The video details issues of our day with emphasis on Catholic Social Teaching.  If you would like to view the related document The Challenge of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, you can do so at www.faithfulcitizenship.org.   The video details issues of our day with emphasis on Catholic Social Teaching and respect for life.

More information about these activities will be available closer to the date in the bulletin.

WE INVITE ALL to spend 30 or 60 minutes in prayer at the Monthly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.  Join others in the Day Chapel on the First Friday and Saturday of each month.  Our prayer intention for the next adoration (October 3 & 4) is for victims of abuse or neglect

Permanent team members are needed. Call Barb at 878-5353 or Kathy at 878-0133.

ST. CECILIA'S ANNUAL FALL CRAFT SHOW is Saturday, October 18th from 9 am – 3 p.m. Please come and see the great selection we have of vendors displaying Thanksgiving and Christmas items, fabric crafts, candles, gift baskets, jewelry, handmade cards, baby items, buckeye items and much more.  We also have a yummy lunch menu, and lots of baked good items.  We hope to see you this year at this great event.

SAINT CECILIA PARISH RECYCLES!  Support our recycling program by dropping your newspapers, magazines, computer, office and other paper and junk mail in the green and yellow Abitibi bin!  PLEASE, NO cardboard, waxed paper, telephone books, metal, plastic or glass!

The bin is located at the southeast corner of the Parish Center (note it is not accessible during school recess times, except for walk-up donations).  Our SPICE program earns money this way, and the environment benefits as well!

SOMETHING SPECIAL!  Last year, our parish celebrated the 125th Anniversary of its founding.  A DVD for this special occasion was produced, and we will have copies available for purchase in November.  Starting in October, we will offer the opportunity to pre-order a copy, so please watch for the order forms.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

We welcome our families to the 2008-2009 Parish School of Religion!  Our classes will begin Monday, September 8th & Sunday, September 14th All students need to be registered prior to attending class.

Our Monday Parent Orientation will be held September 8 in the school hall at 7:00 p.m.  Please pick up your family packet upon entering.  As the staff members are introduced, the students will be dismissed to their respective classes, while the parents remain for the orientation.  The same process will be repeated on Sunday, September 14, with the families gathering in the Parish Center at 10:45 a.m. (you may go there directly after the 9:30 Mass).  Following the orientation session, parents are encouraged to visit their child’s class for the last half-hour.  The orientation is optional for parents of preschool and kindergarten P.S.R. children since it occurs after their class meets.

Not yet registered for P.S.R.?  Late registrations are being accepted in the Parish Office or by mail only.  Please be aware that several of the Sunday class sections are full.  We have already ordered books and other supplies for the children who were enrolled by our August 20th deadline.  Although we order a few extra per class, on occasion we have to obtain additional books for families who enroll late and the students may have to share materials until the supplemental order arrives.  Please note that due to the Parent Orientations on the first day of classes, we cannot take any registrations during P.S.R. class times on September 8th or 14th

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION PROGRAMS - In our parish, we offer classes for parents whose children will be receiving the sacraments.  An important pre-requisite to these classes is that the parents of the child need to be REGISTERED, PARTICIPATING, and ACTIVE MEMBERS of our parish.  If you do not receive regular mailings from the parish, including your monthly contribution envelope packets, you most likely are not on the list of currently registered members.  Please call the Parish Office (878-5353) if you have any questions about this.

PARENT BAPTISM CLASS - Parents who wish to have an infant baptized at St. Cecilia are expected to attend one of our monthly Parent Baptism Classes.  The class meets at 1:30 p.m. in Meeting Room A. Parents need to be pre-registered prior to attending the class (call 878-5353).  Upcoming dates are September 14th and October 12th.

FIRST COMMUNION 2009: Parents of second graders in our religion programs are reminded to reserve Thursday, October 9th on their evening calendars.  The Parent Meeting will be held in Meeting Rooms A & B, starting at 7:00 p.m.  Also, please mark Thursday, November 6th on your calendars as the date of the Parent Meeting for First Reconciliation.

CONFIRMATION:  Parents of eighth graders seeking Confirmation: please mark Thursday, October 23 on your calendar.  It is the date of the Parent Meeting. Also, there will be a Sponsor’s Meeting on Wednesday, October 29.

COMPLETING THE SACRAMENTS is a program offered here to parish families with children in third grade or above who are baptized Catholics but have not received other sacraments (such as Reconciliation and Communion).  The program is designed for the entire family to attend together, and will be held this fall if enough families request it.  Please call 878-0133 to request a pre-registration form or for more information.

Forming Our Conscience about EDUCATION

All persons have the right to a quality education.”

(Administrative Board of the United States Catholic Conference)

“In September 1995, the Administrative Board of the United States Catholic

Conference approved the document: Principles for Educational Reform in the

United States. This document is intended to provide Catholic bishops with an opportunity to exert leadership in the area of educational reform and thus show clearly that the bishops are interested in the educational well-being of all children whether they attend public, private, or religious schools.

  1. All persons have the right to a quality education.

  2. Parental rights and responsibilities are primary in education.

  3. Students are the central focus of all education.

  4. Quality teaching is essential to the learning process.

  5. True quality education must address the moral and spiritual needs of students.

  6. Government has a responsibility to provide adequate resources for the attainment of quality education for all children, and these policy decisions are best made at the level closest to the actual teaching and learning situation.”

(From United States Conference of Catholic Bishops web site)

Further, the bishops included ensuring access to and choice in education in their policy goals to guide Catholics as they form their consciences. (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship)

Education is one of the basic human rights:

“The right to life implies and is linked to other human rights—to the basic goods that every human person needs to live and thrive. All the life issues are connected, for erosion of respect for the life of any individual or group in society necessarily diminishes respect for all life. The moral imperative to respond to the needs of our neighbors—basic needs such as food, shelter, health care, education, and meaningful work—is universally binding on our consciences and may be legitimately fulfilled by a variety of means. Catholics must seek the best ways to respond to these needs. As Blessed Pope John XXIII taught, “[Each of us] has the right to life, to bodily integrity, and to the means which are suitable for the proper development of life; these are primarily food, clothing, shelter, rest, medical care, and, finally, the necessary social services” (Pacem in Terris, no. 11). (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, No. 25)

Parents are the primary educators of their children, but the state has a responsibility, also.  From The Catechism of the Catholic Church:

“The fruitfulness of conjugal love extends to the fruits of the moral, spiritual, and supernatural life that parents hand on to their children by education. Parents are the principal and first educators of their children. In this sense the fundamental task of marriage and family is to be at the service of life.” (1653)

“The state has a responsibility for its citizens' well-being. In this capacity it is legitimate for it to intervene to orient the demography of the population. This can be done by means of objective and respectful information, but certainly not by authoritarian, coercive measures. The state may not legitimately usurp the initiative of spouses, who have the primary responsibility for the procreation and education of their children. In this area, it is not authorized to employ means contrary to the moral law.” (2372)

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship tells us:

How we organize our society—in economics and politics, in law and policy—directly affects the common good and the capacity of individuals to develop their full potential. Every person and association has a right and a duty to participate actively in shaping society and to promote the well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable. (47)

The Respect Life Group’s Spiritually Adopted Baby Project

Our spiritually adopted baby is now beginning her 6th month of life.  Her oil and sweat glands are functioning. The delicate skin of the growing baby is protected from the fetal waters by a special ointment called “vernix”.

The baby begins to look old and wrinkled because she still has little fat underneath the skin to fill it out.  By the end of the month, the baby’s brainwaves resemble those of a new born.  If she was born this month and given proper care, she would survive.

PARISH STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

The Parish Strategic Development Team has completed its first year of implementation of the Strategic Development Plan that was crafted in 2006-2007.  Through the hard work of many volunteers, we have had a number of successes including the redesign of the parish website, surveys of exiting parish school families, an expansion of the TRIP program, completion of the Parish Self Study, and hosting our first two bi-annual town hall meetings.  We are on the first steps of an exciting journey, where our shared vision for the future will become a reality for our parish and school.

To continue our success, however, we need the help of strong leaders from our parish family, so, if you have not already done so, we would like to invite you to become a member of the Parish Strategic Development Team that will guide this implementation process from August 2008 through December 2009.  Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3rd, 6:30 - 8 pm in Meeting Room A.

This is a commitment of a monthly meeting that will last between 1-2 hours depending upon where we are in the process.

If you have any questions or comments, please call Jim Martin at (614) 771-8285 or e-mail jamartin@rrohio.com.  Thank you so much for considering this invitation, we really need your help!

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOCIETY

During the month of July we delivered food to 14 families, made sandwiches for St. Lawrence Haven and provided gasoline and rent support to several families for a total of 196 clients served.

We also helped the community by having a fan collection.  Thanks to our church members who donated $ 1,076.00 in cash and 23 fans, we were able to donate a total of 146 box fans.  We purchased 98 fans with the cash and our society purchased an additional 25 fans.  The Life Care Alliance and Columbus Fire Department were very happy to see this donation.  The fans were delivered to those in our community, usually the elderly who have health problems, who do not have air conditioning.

Our society will be electing a new president to begin in October.  Our current President, Warren Wright, will be the Vice-President for the Diocesan society.  Along with the president there will be a new vice-president and secretary.  Bill Altman will continue as our Treasurer.

Thank you for your continued support.  The needs within our community continue to increase.  Our last collection for 2008 will be in November.  Please consider coming to one of our meetings.  We meet on the first Tuesday of each month in meeting room A at 7:00pm.  Afterwards we make 300 sandwiches to donate to St. Lawrence Haven.  We usually are done by 8:45pm
