THE ADVENT GIVING TREE PROGRAM
Our Advent Giving Tree program has
been in the planning stages and is now ready to move
forward. We have committed to 500 gifts this year
from three organizations, Catholic Social Services –
Adult program; Hilltop Community Churches – Children
program; Columbus Home Healthcare; and 50 money
envelopes which will be used to help members of our
parish family.
Ornaments will be placed on two
Christmas trees for the weekends of Nov 22/23 and
Nov 29/30. There will be one or two items listed on
each ornament. You may purchase one item or both,
securely box and wrap the gift. Tape the ornament
securely to the package. Please keep in mind that
these gifts are moved between 7-10 times prior to
making it to their final destination. We do
appreciate the lovely items attached to the gifts
but these items would be best placed inside the
wrapped package.
Gifts can be returned on Nov 29/30
and all gifts must returned by Sunday, Dec. 7.
This timeframe allows all gifts to be checked
against a master list and sorted for the correct
organization. If you have any questions or lose an
ornament you may call Brenda Case at 361-3918 or the
parish office.

ELECTION DAY 2008
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4
A parishioner sent in this prayer
which Abigail Adams said on the morning of December
7, 1796, the election day in which John Adams was
elected president:
On the
decisions of this day, hangs perhaps the destiny of
America, and may those into whose hands the sacred
deposit is committed be guided and directed by that
wisdom which is from above.
Don’t forget to vote!!

ST. VINCENT
DEPAUL SOCIETY
During the months of August and
September, we helped 26 families (57 clients) with
food deliveries; 600 sandwiches for St. Lawrence
Haven to feed 300 hungry and homeless; and 4
families (13 clients) with rent/mortgage assistance
for a total of 370 clients served. Due to the storm
and the economy, we have had extra expenses and our
funds are depleted.
On November 28th and 29th, we will be
collecting funds after the Masses. Collections
happen only 4 times a year when there are 5 Sundays
in a month. We will not have another for 4 months
(March 28th & 29th, 2009, which will be two weeks
prior to Easter).
Please continue to support our
society as we help those in our community who are in
need
Christmas Basket Donor Appeal
The St. Vincent de Paul society of
St. Cecilia Parish is seeking your help and
assistance for the upcoming Christmas Basket
program. As many of you know, without these baskets
and the donated foods, supplies and monies that make
them possible, many, if not all, of the 125 families
to which we deliver will not enjoy a Christmas meal
together in their homes.
Annually, we confirm donations and
assistance from our local area businesses to
continue to make this gift possible to those who
struggle to make ends meet and provide for their
families. 2008 has proven to be a very challenging
year and you can help us to reach our goal.
With a parish the size of ours, we
enjoy a great diversity of experiences and
opportunities and so we are asking any of our
parishioners who may work for or have a relationship
with a possible (business) donor, to consider asking
them if they would consider being a donor for this
very worthwhile cause.
We will be presenting Certificates of
Gratitude to acknowledge all of our donors and all
donor businesses who wish may also have their names
listed on a donor list to be placed in each basket.
Please contact Michael Cunningham at 614-878-3607 or
Bill Altman at 614-535-8422 with any questions or
donor information
May God bless you and inspire you to
reach out in generosity and love.

ARTIFICIAL NUTRITION AND HYDRATION
The dying should be given attention and
care to help them live their last
Moments in dignity and peace.
(No. 2299, Catechism of the Catholic Church)
The following is copied from the U.S.
Bishops web site.
Is the administration of food and water
(whether by natural or artificial means) to a patient in
a “vegetative state” morally obligatory except when they
cannot be assimilated by the patient’s body or cannot be
administered to the patient without causing significant
physical discomfort?
Yes. The administration of food and
water even by artificial means is, in principle, an
ordinary and proportionate means of preserving life. It
is therefore obligatory to the extent to which, and for
as long as, it is shown to accomplish its proper
finality, which is the hydration and nourishment of the
patient. In this way suffering and death by starvation
and dehydration are prevented.
When nutrition and hydration are being
supplied by artificial means to a patient in a
“permanent vegetative state,” may they be discontinued
when competent physicians judge with moral certainty
that the patient will never recover consciousness?
No. A patient in a “permanent vegetative
state” is a person with fundamental human dignity and
must, therefore, receive ordinary and proportionate care
which includes, in principle, the administration of
water and food even by artificial means.
The Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI, at
the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect
of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith,
approved these Responses, adopted in the Ordinary
Session of the Congregation, and ordered their
publication.
Rome, from the Offices
of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith,
August 1, 2007.

Levada Prefect Angelo Amato, S.D.B.

Spiritually Adoptive Baby Project
Your adoptive baby is now 8 months
old. Everything in your baby’s body is preparing for
her entry into the world. The baby looks pinkish and
smooth now that a good layer of fat has been laid down
under the skin. She is also developing immunity from
her mother’s antibodies to protect her until she
develops her own resistance to illness several months
after birth.

VETERANS DAY
NOVEMBER
11, 2008
On November 11
as we commemorate Veterans Day by recalling the
sacrifices of our service men and women, we are mindful
of those currently serving our country, both here and
overseas. Praying for their safe return to their friends
and loved ones, we lift them up:
Almighty
God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all
the men and women of our armed forces at home and
abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace;
strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give
them courage to face the perils which beset them; and
grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever
they may be; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
